Masterplan Tegel: research and industrial park on 460 hectares
At the 6th site conference, the masterplan for the future use of Tegel Airport was presented. The site is to become a centre for Urban Technologies.

At the Amerikahaus, the masterplan for the post-aviation use of Tegel Airport was presented during the 6th site conference. It was based on the results of a workshop process with internationally renowned planning teams held in spring 2012. A research and industrial park is to be built on the roughly 460-hectare site after the airport closes.
Urban Technologies as the guiding concept
The plan envisions a centre for Urban Technologies. Companies, research institutions and start-ups are to work there on solutions for the cities of the future. Senate Urban Development Minister Michael Mueller described the planning as a complex challenge but emphasised that the masterplan provides a binding yet flexible foundation for implementation.
Impact on surrounding boroughs
The project site lies mainly in the borough (Bezirk) of Reinickendorf and borders Spandau and Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf. Establishing a business and science hub of this scale will affect demand for apartments in northern and western Berlin. At the same time, infrastructure needs will grow, from transport links to social facilities.
Dependent on BER opening
Implementation of the masterplan depends on the opening of the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER). Only once all air traffic has moved to Schoenefeld can Tegel close and the site be released for redevelopment. Given recent delays to the BER opening date, the exact timeline for the Tegel project remains open.
